Who We Are
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, H.E.R.O. is dedicated to delivering free, high-quality health care and educational support to underserved communities across the Caribbean. Through our annual medical outreach initiatives and our Literacy and Educational Support Program, we empower students to reach grade-level proficiency, excel in standardized exams, and access the resources they need to thrive.

In the Beginning
H.E.R.O was founded in January 2000 by Dr. Wayne Sampson and Dr. Collie Oudkerk in Tallahassee, Florida. Inspired by their volunteer work in Guyana, where they witnessed a lack of quality healthcare, Dr Sampson proposed a plan to engage U.S.-based specialists for sustainable medical and educational programs in underserved communities, leading to H.E.R.O.'s establishment.

Our First Mission
HERO, formerly Health and Educational Relief for Guyana, has evolved into a national organization since its start. Our first mission in December 2000, led by Dr. Wayne Sampson and Collie Oudkerk, successfully treated hundreds of patients. Annually, we expand our missions to Jamaica, Grenada, Antigua Barbuda, and Haiti, providing care to thousands and performing numerous surgeries. We also offer dental services and a Vision Care program, ensuring many receive essential eyeglasses while collaborating with local healthcare professionals.

Our Mission
H.E.R.O. has grown rapidly since its inception, with a focused mission to provide free, high-quality healthcare and educational support services to communities in need. Our programs adapt to the complex challenges faced by these communities, thanks to the dedication of our medical and educational specialists. We envision a Caribbean where healthcare and educational opportunities are accessible to all, regardless of background. With the support of our generous donors, we are working to make this vision a reality.
