HERO 2016 BREAKFAST REVIEW

And a great time was had by all!

annual eventsHERO’s annual fundraising breakfast was once again a resounding success in 2016 as more than 350 friends, family members and other well-wishers flocked to the St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church Hall in Brooklyn on April 16th for several hours of food and fun in support of a worthy cause. Attendees were treated to a smorgasbord of delectable culinary delights from across the Caribbean and Latin American region, amid a celebratory atmosphere enhanced by musical and artistic performances with a decidedly Caribbean flavor.

Following brief opening remarks by Board Members KenrickCort and Dr. John Mitchell, and an opening prayer by Pastor Errol Lewis, the Chronicle Atlantic Symphony Steel Orchestra took to the stage as attendees feasted on a scrumptious breakfast buffet including such staples as roti and curry, bakes with ackee and salt fish (bacalao), and an assortment of beverages including sorrel, ginger beer and tropical fruit juices. Exhilarating performances by the Maize and Paris Dance Troupes were received with enthusiastic applause, as were live musical interludes by saxophonist Zachary Clarke and Folk Music Maestro Jeggae.

HERO’s annual breakfast is one of two signature events held each year to raise funds for the non-profit, humanitarian organization; the other major event is our annual Awards Presentation and Gala. (Click here for a review of our 2016 Awards Presentation).

HERO 2016 Awards Presentation & Gala:
GIVING SUPPORT, RESTORING HOPE
by Denise Mitchell

It was a night to remember!

On Saturday, September 17th, 2016, the Red Room at New York’s Terrace on the Park was bursting with excitement as more than 400 supporters, well-wishers and friends of HERO came together for our annual Awards Presentation Dinner and Dance. Under the adroit chairmanship of Ms. Sharon James-Ackah, J.D., the evening’s proceedings were deftly guided by expert Master of Ceremonies Kishore Seunarine. Magnificent solo performances by medical student and violinist Giselle Sparano and acclaimed baritone song stylist Anthony Alleyne, set the evening off to a superlative start, with festivities continuing well into the early hours of morning as virtuoso DJ Hannah kept our guests on their feet with a scintillating array of pulsating music.

Together with the conferment of awards and commendations for outstanding professional accomplishment and public service, the gala also doubles as our signature fundraising event. By both measures, it was a resounding success. For their years of humanitarian service and extraordinary dedication to the mission of our organization, HERO was pleased and proud to honor the work of the following members and volunteers with the awards indicated:

  • Andrea Lambert, M.D., MBA – New York State Award
  • Anna-Carina Sporri, MS, RD, CDN – New York City Council Award
  • Audrey Dupree-Sealey, Ph.D., FNP – Congressional Proclamation Award
  • Heather Mitchell, FNP – HERO Humanitarian Award

“Once again, our supporters have turned out in record numbers to affirm their support of our mission and the life-changing services we are privileged to provide to residents of underserved and disadvantaged communities,” said Dr. Collie Oudkerk, President of HERO. “As we look to the future together, we are sincerely grateful to our members and supporters for their magnanimous contributions of time, resources and expertise that make our work possible. I am even more enthusiastic now than ever before about the future growth of our organization and look forward to expanding our services to countless others in the years ahead.”
